Mad Hatter cartoon character on the thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a cartoon Mad Hatter character in a green top hat with a band reading 106, a green bow tie and an orange jacket, holding a steaming teapot and a teacup. The bold black outlines and flat, smooth colour fills give it a cartoon look. Green, orange, and skin-toned areas dominate the design, set against the curved skin of the limb.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tomas Gorse came up the orchard lane on the last Saturday of August with a hat box under one arm and a copper kettle swinging from a length of cord. The pickers at Brook Row said he was either a fool or a salesman, and nobody in Hollin Vale had bought a hat since the war.

He set the kettle on a flat stone beneath the oldest tree, the one the village called number one hundred and six because someone had chalked it there years ago and never rubbed it off. He lit a small fire of windfalls. Old Mrs Penney took a cup when he offered it and said the apples were not for sale. Tomas said he did not want apples. He wanted to make tea under a tree in the last of the sun, and he wanted someone to drink it with him.

So she drank it, and told him what everyone knew. A hatter had once tended these trees for a farmer too mean to pay him, and the hatter had said that one day he would come back for his wages. The farmer laughed. The next summer the trees gave twice the fruit, and the farmer stopped laughing. Nobody had ever seen the hatter collect. They only heard the kettle on the wind every late August.

Tomas tipped the last of the tea into a chipped cup and set it on the stone. Then he lifted the green hat from the box, its band stamped with the number 106, and hung it on the lowest branch facing the lane. He walked off down the hill without looking back. By dusk the pickers had filled a hundred and six baskets, and the cup on the stone was still warm, with a single apple floating in it.
