Just Breathe script with beaded chains on foot

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

Black script reads Just Breathe across the top of a foot, with a smaller f50s line beneath and a triangle symbol above it. Two dotted chains with pink beads hang from the lettering and end in small drop charms. The linework is bold and clean, and the composition sits diagonally across the foot against a wooden deck.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud Pettifer came early to the hall to set out the cups, and found the old string of beads in her coat pocket, the one her mother had kept for telling the days. Fifty years since the last bell, and the roof had been mended twice, and the blackboard was gone, but the hooks by the door were where they had always been, so she hung her coat on the one nearest the window the way she had as a girl.

Her mother had a saying from the village school, one nobody had written down and everybody could recite. When a name would not come, you held a bead between finger and thumb and breathed out, one bead for one breath, until the name rose up through the water like a lantern someone had dropped down a well. Mr Ashdown had taught it with a silver drop charm on his watch chain, cut in the shape of a small triangle, and he would turn it in the light whenever a child was stuck.

They came in ones and twos, stooped and pink from the walk, calling out to each other with the wrong surnames. Dennis Corby, who had once been the loudest boy in the yard, now spoke so softly she had to lean in to hear him. Ruth Amory stood in the doorway and said, "I know your face, I know it," and would not come further until Maud held out the string. So they stood in a rough ring by the radiator, passing the chain from hand to hand, breathing out bead by bead.

Dennis got there first, then Ruth, then a Tommy nobody could place until the very last pink bead, when Maud felt the drop at the end of the chain grow warm in her palm. It was her own name that came up last. She had forgotten she was one of the ones being looked for.
