Hello Kitty tattoo flash sheet

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A sheet of hand-drawn flash designs featuring Hello Kitty in various scenes, including a dagger, a rose, a panda, a heart, a bow, an ice cream cone, and a cat and a pig in costume. The designs use bold black outlines, solid fills and shaded highlights. Bright pink, red, yellow, teal and green inks dominate, and the sheet is photographed at an angle on a table beside a mug and a Hello Kitty bag.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dez had until Friday to finish the flash sheet, and at half eleven on Thursday night the only thing finished was the cocoa going cold beside the drawing board. Mr Okonedo had asked for something for the front window. 'Nothing rude,' he'd said, tapping the counter. 'Something people laugh at and then book.' So Dez had drawn a dagger with a ribbon round its hilt, a rose the size of a dinner plate, a panda with a teal bow, a heart, a melting ice cream, and the white cat with the red bow in two daft costumes: a grey hood on one, a pink pig's snout on the other.

The pig was the trouble. Every time Dez went over its snout with the brush it looked less like a joke and more like somebody's nan in a dressing gown. Dez fed a biscuit to the cat in the margin, gave the pig a second, rounder ear, and gave up around one o'clock with the paint pots lined up like soldiers and the red mug with the big black dots catching the light from the street.

On Friday morning the sheet went up in the window, pinned at one corner with a blue drawing pin. By ten a girl in a school blazer had her nose pressed to the glass, pointing at the bow. She wanted it small, on her ankle, and she wanted the pig instead of the cat. Mr Okonedo looked across the shop floor at Dez, who was holding a stencil sheet and a cup of tea that had gone lukewarm.

'Ask the artist,' he said. 'The pig's on Fridays.'
