Traditional flash sheet of cartoon characters
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A flash sheet on cream paper shows six cartoon characters arranged across the page, including a blue creature, a grey-eared elephant, a white cat and a few animal and figure heads. Each design has bold black outlines and flat colour fills in red, yellow, blue, pink and green. Several characters wear red flowers, and small star and sparkle marks fill the gaps between them.

The rain had come in sideways across Haddon Market since eight, and by eleven Dolly Pask had given up on selling and was wrapping her painted tins in yesterday's newspaper. Under the awning one last sheet sat on a trestle: cream card she had drawn over a damp winter, six figures in bold black ink and colours bright enough to argue with the grey. A grey elephant with ears like wet sails. A white cat in a pink bow. A blue spirit who had once been shut in a brass lamp and never quite forgiven anyone for it. A sleepy blue creature with red poppies tucked behind one ear. A duck with a flower on his head and a grudge in his beak. And a small orange fellow who was mostly eyebrows.

A boy in a yellow cagoule stopped, dripping, and tapped the creature with the poppies. 'Does that one talk?' he asked. Dolly studied the card for a long moment before answering. 'Only when somebody's listening properly,' she said, and he ran off before she could decide whether she had meant it.
She rolled the sheet into a tube and tied it with garden string. The blue spirit, she was almost certain, had shifted its weight when she wasn't looking. Down the row the poppies had gone bright as if someone had just watered them.
At the gate the rain stopped all at once, the way it does in Haddon, and the wind caught the card. Dolly held on to the tube with both hands while six small faces, tucked under her arm, peered out at the wet cobbles as though they had only just found out where they were going.
