Keep fighting script quote on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm with a single line of black script lettering reading Keep fighting, stay strong and live with hope, running diagonally from the wrist towards the elbow. The linework is fine and even, with the capital K and the f and h ascenders drawn with flowing loops. The image is black and grey against a pale, soft-focus textured background, with the arm framed in the upper right.

Dearest Ysolde,

The wall-painters came up from the harbour yesterday with their pots of lamp-black and long brushes, and they have finished the sentence over the eastern gate at last. You will want to know what it says, because Father Anselm sent word that the Council argued for three days over every word. Keep fighting, stay strong and live with hope. Forty letters, each as tall as a grown man, the K looping down nearly to the cobbles like a fishing hook.
I am writing because I was the one who drafted it. Nobody in the chancery would put their name to the wording, so the Regent handed it to me, the copyist with the crooked thumb, and told me to make it sound like a promise rather than a prayer. I spent a week at it. The h in hope I made tall, because you taught me that a tall letter looks braver from below.
Yesterday, when the painters had gone for their supper, a boy from the bakeries stood under the arch and read it aloud, slowly, sounding out the flourishes. Then he asked whether the words were for the soldiers or for the bakers. I told him they were for whoever walked beneath them. He considered that and said he would keep fighting for the bread, then, and ran off with his cap in his hand.
I have been thinking about him all evening. Write back and tell me whether a sentence can do anything at all, or whether it only tells us where we were already standing.
Yours in ink, Maud
