Keep going script on a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on gravel with the words keep going written in black script across the top of the foot, near the toes. The upper image shows a pair of teal and black running shoes viewed from the front, and the lower image shows the foot with a shoe beside it. The lettering is crisp and mostly uniform in weight, and the photo is bright with a neutral background.

Dear Mags, the shoes are finally dry enough to send back to you, though I've left the laces tied the way you always did, double knot and a loop for luck. Don't laugh. The Tuesday session on the canal path was a washout, and I spent it on the bench by the lock keeper's cottage with a flask of tea going cold, watching a girl of maybe fourteen try to outrun her own shadow. She kept stopping. Every hundred yards she'd bend double, hands on her knees, and every time I wanted to shout something useful at her, something about cadence or breathing, and every time I didn't.

What I did instead was walk down to the gravel where the path bends under the railway and sit with my shoes off, the way you showed me at Hebden, bare soles on the stones, just to feel what the ground was telling me. It was telling me plenty. The girl came past again, slower now, and she looked at my feet and grinned as though I'd been caught out. I said nothing clever. I just tapped the top of my own foot where the ink would go one day, if I ever had the nerve, and she laughed and pushed on.
I've been turning that over since. You'll say it's a silly thing to put on skin, two words in a looping hand that anyone could say. But I think the words are the easy part. The hard part is the stubborn little instruction that rides along with every stride, the one that doesn't care how tired you are or how far the hill goes up. Anyway, the shoes are yours. Lace them tight and go on without me. I'll be at the lock, watching for that girl.
