Script quote running up the foot
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot with painted red toenails rests on long green grass. A single line of black cursive script, reading Somewhere over the rainbow, runs from the ankle area up towards the toes. The lettering is thin and even, with the photo taken in natural daylight against a busy green background.

The rain had stopped by the time the Land Rover coughed itself to a halt at the top of the Bwlch, and Gran was already out in the road with the map case held over her head like a parasol. 'Don't fuss, Owen,' she said, though I hadn't said a word. The cloud was lifting off the far ridge in grey rags, and below us the valley was still wet and dark, every field a different green.

She had sung that song the whole climb, the old film one, flat on the high notes and certain of every word. When I laughed, she stopped and said the Americans had got it wrong, that the rainbow was never the point. The point was the wanting, the bit where you keep looking up while the bus takes you home. I asked where she had learned it. 'From a wireless in a kitchen in Pwllheli,' she said, 'the winter my brother went to sea and never wrote.'
I spent an hour under the bonnet with a spanner while she sat on the bank with her flask, humming. Somewhere a sheep bell rang. When I finally got the engine turning, a rainbow had come out over the sea far below, a faint arc settled on the water as if someone had set it down there carefully.
She didn't look at it. She was writing in her notebook, a letter, she said, to a man who would be seventy-one now if he had lived. She folded it into the glovebox before we moved off. 'Somewhere over, Owen,' she said, and pulled the door shut. I still don't know whether she meant the rainbow or the boy who never came home.
