Finish Strong script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the words Finish Strong written in a slanted, handwritten script across the forearm. The thin, dark linework is solid with no visible shading, and the ink appears to be a single dark tone against pale skin. The background is a grey pavement, with a navy running shoe with pink accents in the lower half of the frame.

The last runner in the Saltmarsh Half always came along the quay with the tide going out behind her, and for eleven years I was the one holding the tape at the line. Nobody wants that job. You stand by the fish market with a bucket of water and a clipboard that goes soft in the drizzle, watching people who have nothing left arrive anyway.

The year I remember, a young woman came off the sea wall with her shoes squelching and her laces undone. Someone from the lifeboat crew had double-knotted them the way my dad taught me, and she still stopped to check the knot before she looked up and asked how far. I told her the truth: four hundred yards, mostly flat, and the crowd at the finish would be louder than she expected. She didn't believe me.
Her trainers were navy with pink flashes on the heel, the kind I'd seen in the chandler's window for months before anyone bought them. They looked too clean for what she'd put them through. When she came past me, the sign I'd been holding wobbled, and I shouted the only thing I had, the thing my old coach used to bellow from the car park: finish strong. She didn't turn round. She raised an arm without slowing and kept going.
The clock said two hours and fifty-one. I wrote it on the clipboard in smeared biro, under the rain, and that was the only record I ever kept of her. Some mornings I still think about that raised arm, the way a person answers when they've heard you and has no breath to spare.
