Brother Anselm had the slowest feet in the house, so the abbot gave the lower valley post to me. Every Tuesday I took the leather satchel down the switchback path to Hollin Bridge, past the sheep gates and the dead mill wheel, and every Tuesday Anselm stood in the chapel doorway and called after me the same words, half blessing and half complaint: keep on running, Tom, the bread won't carry itself.

The February I turned seventeen, the path iced over from the top of the fell to the beck. I went down on my backside three times and lost my cap in the bracken. At the bridge the widow Ferrier was waiting with her hand out for the letter from her son in Leeds, which had been three weeks coming because of the snow. I told her it had come the long way round, which was true. She pressed a heel of bread into my coat and said nothing more, which was kinder.
On the climb back I wanted to sit down in the drifts and let the cold have me, the way the old lay brothers said it took fools. Instead I counted fence posts and thought of Anselm's voice. When I came in at dusk, soaked and grey, the lamp was lit in the scriptorium and he was waiting with the ledger open. Beside the day's entry for the bridge he had drawn a small open heart in ink, the way he marked the parcels that had reached their door, and beside it he had written my name in his careful joined hand.
He handed me a towel without looking up. You kept on, he said, and went back to his copying.
