The Bramleys went over in Tuesday's wind, every one of them leaning the same way as if they'd been told something. Dad says it's the best crop since 1976, which he has said every year since 1976, but this time he has the ledger to prove it. On Thursday he climbed the old ladder with a pail he wouldn't let me carry, one hand on the rung and the other reaching for the high fruit, and I stood at the bottom holding the ladder steady like a child holding a father's coat.

I found your pencil tin in the shed, the one with your initials gouged into the lid with a penknife you weren't supposed to own. Mum has boxed up the spare room and left the back window open so the wasps can get at the windfalls, and nobody has said anything about it, which is how we are now.

Remember the gap in the hedge down by the lane? The one you two cut through every August, its shape like the top of a heart where the bough bends down to meet the smaller trunk? I went to look on Sunday and the bramble had grown right over it. I spent an hour with the secateurs, hands scratched raw, and when I finally got through there was a patch of light on the path exactly where you used to wait for him to come down the slope.

Come home for the picking. Bring the penknife if you still have it. I'll leave the ladder against the Bramley for you.
