Just keep swimming script on a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot shows the words Just keep swimming tattooed in thin, dark blue-black handwritten script across the top of the foot, running towards the toes. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink appears to be a single dark tone. The foot fills most of the frame against a checked tiled floor and a light blue wrapped surface.

She kept a card pinned above the potting bench, written in her slanting hand: Just keep swimming. I asked her once whether she meant the fish or herself. She said the fish had never needed telling, and I should mind my own weeding.

The winter the glasshouse flooded, she went into the hospital in Kendal and did not come back to the garden. I kept the pond going. Every morning I broke the ice with the heel of a spade, fed the fish, and counted them the way she had taught me, round and round the rim until the number came out right.

In March I found the card face down in a seed tray and turned it over. On the back, in pencil, she had written my name and a row of tiny circles, like the rings a fish leaves when it turns. I still have it. The orange fish lived eleven years and was buried under the rhubarb, which she would have said was the only sensible place for anything to end up.
