The frost had got into the hinges of the granary door by the third week of January, so Old Tam Rowe had to put his shoulder to it each morning and swear at the wood. His daughter Nell kept the only key on a loop of tarred string round her neck, and she would not give it up, not to her father, not to the miller's boy who came up the lane asking for a sack of oats.

The key had a bow shaped like a fern unrolling, with curls filed into the iron by her grandmother's hand. Behind that door sat the seed corn, and every winter the family had lived through the hungry months because nobody opened it early. Tam knew this. He had said it himself at his own mother's funeral, in a voice that hadn't carried past the gate.

Then in February the bank sent a man on a grey horse, and Tam came in from the byre with his face gone the colour of tallow. He had signed for a loan against the farm to pay for his son's passage to the new country, and the money was due before Lady Day. He said the seed could be sold at Michaelmas price if they moved fast. Nell said nothing. She went out in the snow with the key in her fist and sat on the granary step until the cold got into her bones and stayed there.

In March the thaw came all at once. Nell unlocked the door with the sun warm on her back, and the seed lay dry and whole in its sacks, smelling of dust and last summer. Her father stood in the doorway a long while. Then he took the key from her hand and turned it in the lock twice, the way his mother had, only to hear it click.
