Profile faces in a heart with pansies

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo of two facing profile faces, a man with a moustache and a woman with short wavy hair, set inside an outlined heart. Purple pansies, a flower bud and green leaves frame the heart on the forearm. Bold black outlines sit with soft blended skin tones, a pink blush and gradient shading in the heart.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pit took Ned Hollins's brother in the spring of 1889, and by the back end of that year Ned had stopped speaking to anyone who worked the Low Seam. He went down at six, came up at two, and walked home along the tip with his cap pulled low. Nell Abbott watched him from the chapel steps because she had nothing else to watch, and because he never once looked her way.

She wrote him a note in pencil on the back of a flour bill and tucked it under the bread tin on the Hollinses' back step. It said only that heartsease grew on the tip if you dug in the far corner by the old winding gear, and that she had dug there every Sunday since her own father went under. He did not come to chapel that week. He came to the corner instead, and found her on her knees with a trowel and a paper twist of seed, and the two of them stood in the wind not looking at each other, which was how they managed it for the rest of their lives.

Folk in Carrick Bank still tell how Ned cut a heart from a pit prop that winter and carved two profiles into it, facing each other but never meeting, because a collier and a washerwoman's girl could not be seen to stare. Nell's mother called it foolishness. Ned said a face turned side on was the only honest way to look at someone you had to keep.

When Ned was buried, Nell planted pansies along his side of the tip. When she followed him the next spring, the village found the carved heart hanging in the chapel porch with a single purple bud pushed through the gap between their chins.
