Black and grey realism tattoo of a kneeling angel among clouds, with script lettering above, on an upper arm and shoulder.

Kneeling angel and clouds on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A kneeling figure in a flowing robe, shown in profile with head bowed, sits among soft cloud shapes on the upper arm. Smooth grey shading and fine detail give the figure and clouds a realistic, dimensional look, with script lettering curving across the top of the shoulder. The tattoo is in black and grey ink and fills the upper arm, shown against a blurred background.

The officer at Halvers Bridge lifts the blanket with two fingers, the way you'd lift a sleeping cat's ear, and the grey angel looks up at him from the panel. You have spent eleven weeks on her. Thin washes of grey laid over gesso, clouds built up in layers so they seem to lean against the wood, and the kneeling figure bowed so low that her face is only a suggestion of profile. Across the top rail runs the script you practised on the backs of old invoices until your hand stopped shaking.

"Commission?" he asks. You tell him the truth because the truth is easier to keep straight. A widow in the hill town of Varda paid in cash, and asked for her husband's name to be lettered into the cloud above the angel's shoulder. She stood in your workshop doorway and would not come in. She said he had always liked the sky better than the ground.

He reads the name slowly, moving his lips. Then he looks at you, and then at the stamp in his hand, and sets it down without using it. "My father was a Halvers," he says. "Went over the ridge in the winter of the flood. We never found him." He wraps the blanket back over the panel himself, tucking the corners the way a person does for something that might be cold.

You drive on up the switchback road with the panel strapped in the passenger seat. In the rear mirror the sodium lamps of the checkpoint fade to orange, and the clouds you painted catch the last of them, so that the angel seems to kneel a little lower with every bend.
