Knife and fork on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A knife and fork are drawn side by side in loose, sketchy black linework. Soft grey shading and light hatching give the blades and handles some depth, with a few stray marks around the edges. The design sits on pale skin against a dark leather background.

The band was on its second waltz when Mrs Hollis came down the back stairs with a tray of supper plates and the look of a woman who had counted the forks twice and found one short. I was nineteen, cloakroom girl at the Regal Palais in Stockport, and I had the only key to the scullery drawer. She didn't ask me. She didn't need to.

I'd been drawing on the backs of cloakroom tickets all winter, mostly the dancers' shoes and the bandleader's rubbery mouth. That afternoon I had sketched her late husband's carving knife and fork, the pair he'd used on the Christmas bird every year until his heart gave out at the tram stop. I'd given them a few quick lines and a grey smudge where the light caught the blade, and I'd slipped the fork into my coat pocket to draw it again from life before the dinner dance. I'd meant to put it back. I'd meant a great many things that week.
She held out her hand, and I gave her the ticket first, because it seemed the less shameful thing to hand over. She studied the drawing under the cloakroom bulb for a long time. 'You've got his grip wrong,' she said. 'He always held the fork like a pen.' Then she took the fork from my pocket without looking at it, and went back up the stairs with her tray.
I pinned the ticket above the tea urn that night. When the band struck up the last waltz, I could see it from the door, the knife and fork pale against the cork, and beside them a small note in her looping hand: Like a pen.
