The lift had been out since Tuesday, so Nell Cardew took the stairs to the fourteenth floor with a carrier bag of wool and a pattern she had photocopied at the library. The stairwell smelt of bleach and somebody's chip supper. Her grandson Ray was waiting on the landing with his arms folded, not quite looking at her. "Nan said you'd know how to fix it," he said, holding up a navy cardigan with one sleeve half pulled out of it.

It had been his grandad's, and Ray had unravelled a row trying to make it longer and then could not stop. Nell sat on the cracked step by the fire door and showed him the difference. Knit towards you, the needle goes in from the front, wraps, pulls through. Purl away. "Same stitch, other way round," she said. "Like catching yourself in a shop window and deciding it's not you."
He practised on the corner of a carrier bag, then on a scrap of grey yarn, swearing softly at every dropped loop. Nell didn't hurry him. Below them a door banged, a football match leaked through a wall, and the tower creaked the way it always did when the wind came up off the estate. By the time the landing light clicked off on its timer, Ray had three neat rows of ribbing, uneven but holding.
"Right," he said, and stood. He rolled the cardigan back into a ball, careful this time, and tucked the loose end under his thumb. "Tomorrow, the sleeve." Nell smoothed the pattern across her knee and found she had nothing to add. He went down the stairs in the dark, counting stitches out loud the way his grandad used to.
