Labradorite bracelets over red tattoo on wrist

Hand · Colour · Photo

Multiple strands of smooth, polished labradorite beads are stacked around a wrist, showing flashes of blue and green iridescence. Red tattoo linework is visible on the back of the hand and wrist, partly hidden by the beads, with a design that appears to include curved, botanical-like shapes. The image is a close, slightly angled shot with a dark background, and the red ink is the main colour in the skin.

Dear Ruth,

The officer at Harwich wanted to know why a grown woman was carrying forty pounds of stones in a flour sack. I told him they were beads, which was true, and that they had been cut from a grey shoreline where the rock splits along a seam that only shows its colour when the light comes at the right slant. He turned one over under his desk lamp and watched it flash from dull grey to a sudden lit-up blue, like a struck match in a dark room. He didn't say anything for a while. Then he waved me through and asked if I had anything for his wife.

I have been travelling the coast roads for six weeks now, selling strands to shops that smell of incense and to a man in Sheerness who sells everything from clocks to cough sweets. He paid me in cash and in a jar of marmalade. At night I sit on the bed in the back room and string the beads on red thread, working them round and round until the strands are thick enough to hide the ink Ferris drew for me the spring before he moved south. It is a fern, or a pair of wings, depending on the hour and how tired my eyes are. The beads move over it when I lift my hand, so the red shows and vanishes and shows again.

The bags are nearly empty now. Yesterday a girl in a market stall asked me why the stones seemed to change colour when she walked past them, and I told her the truth, that they only do it for people who are moving.

I have kept the last bead back for you. It is the one with a pink streak through the middle, the colour of your kitchen door. Hold it up to the window at dawn and wait. The blue comes out slowly, like it has been thinking about it.

Love, Marian
