Blue bead bracelet tattoo on a wrist

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two wrapped strands of beads encircling the inner wrist, with glossy blue beads alternating with smaller grey beads joined by thin dark lines. The beads are shaded with highlights and cast soft shadows, giving them a three-dimensional look. Blue ink dominates against the grey and skin tones, and the photo is taken straight on the palm side of the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The string came across my bench on a wet Thursday in March, knotted at one end where someone had given up on it. Mr Pargeter at the pawn counter had two dozen blue glass drops in a tobacco tin, and a handful of grey spacers that looked like pearls left out in the rain. He wanted them back on silk by Saturday, before the dance at the Corn Exchange.

I worked it the old way, two strands at once so the weight sat even. Every blue drop got a grey spacer either side, and every fourth grey one I pinched a little tighter with the pliers so it would sit proud of the rest. My mother taught me that a strand should look like it is going somewhere even when it is lying still. The wire kept wanting to twist, so I kept undoing it and starting again from the clasp, the radio on low and the kettle going cold beside the vice.

On Friday night the tin was one drop short. I turned out the drawer, swept under the bench, and found it at last behind the radiator, furred with dust and the colour of a deep evening sea. Pargeter came in with his hat still on and asked if it was done. I told him it was nearly done, which was true, and that the last drop would go on when I had the knot right.

He held the finished loops up to the bulb, the blue running round the wrist like a tide over grey stones, and said he had never seen a thing so plainly meant to be worn twice round. I tied off the knot with the recovered bead tucked against it, and it was the only one on the whole string that did not quite match.
