Sun and crescent moon on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small tattoo on the inner wrist showing a sun with a ring of rays and a crescent moon below and to the left. The linework is thin and the ink is a dark grey-black with no shading. The hand is raised against a blurred green grass background, with silver rings, teal nail polish and two black braided bracelets with charms partly covering the wrist.

The lift has been broken since Tuesday, so you take the stairs with a carrier bag of Mrs Okafor's rice in one hand and the other hand pressed to the cold rail. Ahmed from fifteen sits on the landing again with his phone propped on his knee. He doesn't look up as you pass, which tells you he has been crying and would rather you didn't mention it.

Last March the council sent a man to paint the stairwell grey. Nobody asked for anything else, but Ahmed's little sister, Dilnoza, who is nine and has firm opinions, drew a sun on the concrete beside the bins in marker, rays spiking out like a child's crown, and a crescent moon beneath it with a bitten edge. You told her the moon looked hungry. She said the moon was only waiting for its turn.
On the night the lift finally worked, you copied the two shapes onto the inside of your own wrist with a biro, because your shift started at six and nobody else on the block was awake to tell you the time. The rays came out uneven. By morning the ink had softened into a grey ghost, and you realised you had been measuring the whole day by it, sun out, moon in, exactly as she had planned.
The next afternoon Dilnoza met you at the bins with a fresh marker and held out her own arm. You drew the sun for her slowly, so the rays would sit straight, while Ahmed came down the stairs for once and stood in the grey light beside you, waiting for the moon to take its turn.
