Fine line wave tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small single line tattoo of a curved wave sits on the inner wrist, drawn in a thin dark ink with an open crescent shape. Several stacked bracelets cover the lower part of the wrist, including black, green, white and gold beads, a silver turtle charm and a cowrie shell cuff. The background is a soft, lightly blurred cream lace, and the lighting is warm and natural.

The tide tables came to Marnie Holt pinned to a fish crate under a cowrie shell, so the wind wouldn't take them. Her uncle Asa had written the times in pencil, and beside each high water he had drawn the same mark: a single curved stroke, open at one end, like a wave that had thought better of breaking.

Every bracelet in the tin on her windowsill had a reason. The green beads came from the Penhale market, the white from a wreck salvage auction, the gold from her mother's wedding. Asa had strung the silver turtle himself, saying a turtle always finds the beach it was born on, which was the sort of thing he said when he didn't want to say anything else.
In March the crescent appeared on the harbour wall in chalk, then on the inside of the lifeboat shed door, then scratched into the sand above the slipway. Marnie followed it along the coast for nine days, copying the curve into her notebook, until she understood it was never the same wave twice. It was only the shape the sea made just before it turned back.
On the tenth morning she went down at the lowest ebb and found his oilskin folded on the rocks, a cowrie cuff knotted to one sleeve. She slid the bracelets up her arm, one by one, and sat on the cold stone to wait for the water to come back to the place he had left it.
