Dotwork mandala on ankle and foot

Dotwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot and ankle show a large circular mandala built from fine dots and radiating linework, with a floral motif curling down towards the toes. The shading moves from dense dark dots at the edges to lighter open patterns in the centre, giving depth. The ink is entirely black and grey against pale skin, and the foot fills most of the frame on a wooden floor.

The col at Hesketh Gap is where the wind keeps its own hours, and you have spent three days pinning the same dot to the same stone. Your brass theodolite, with its cracked sight, sits on the tripod like a patient heron. Below you the valley is a dish of mist, and the only sound is the tick of your pencil on vellum as you work out, dot by dot, the arc of a circle no one asked you to survey.

Your father drew mandalas in the margins of his tide tables, always from the centre outwards, never tracing a line twice. He said the dots were how the sea remembered the moon. You thought it sentimental nonsense until the morning the cairn on the summit began to answer you in the same tongue: a ring of stones, each one a seed, each seed bending toward a path that curls down the gully like a fern unrolling.

On the fourth day the mist lifted and you saw it whole. A rosette of stone rings lay over the scree, with a curling tail of cairns leading down to the shepherd's hut. Your pencil stopped. Someone had built it long before the Ordnance men came, and dressed each stone with pale lichen so walkers could read it from the ridge. The thing you had been drawing was a map the hill had been drawing for centuries.

You packed the theodolite, rolled the vellum loosely, and walked down following the curl with your boots. At the hut you left the sheet under a stone and wrote one line along its edge: the centre is where you stand. Then you went home the long way, counting dots.
