Purple, pink and blue roses on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
Three roses in purple, magenta and pale blue sit across the shoulder and upper chest, with the purple rose at the top and the two lower blooms overlapping. Petals and leaves are shaded with soft gradients and defined outlines, and fine dotted lines trail beneath the flowers. The close crop shows bare skin against a grey top, with a thin chain visible at the collarbone.

Dear Nell,

The frost came early again and I've lost the back row of the cold frame, but the three bushes by the wall held. You'll not believe the purple one. Dad would have called it showing off. It opened the morning after the storm, all at once, as if it had been waiting for someone to notice, and the bees went straight for it before I'd even got my gloves off.
The pale blue one is the stubborn one. Mr Okafor from the allotments swore a blue rose couldn't be had without a bit of cheating, and he was right, though I'd sooner not admit it. We steeped the cuttings in dye overnight, the way you'd colour a christening ribbon, and the pink came up like a bruise that fades. Nobody will ever know which bit was the rose and which was the water. I think that's rather fine.
I ran the string line across the bed this week, the dotted one with a knot every yard, so the new stock goes in straight. Every knot is a planting hole. When I stood back at dusk the whole bed looked like someone had stitched it closed.
Come down in September when the cobnuts are in. Bring the good secateurs, the ones with the red handles, and don't let Tom near the magenta one. I'll keep the kettle on.
Love, Maggie
