Lace bra tattoo across the chest
Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo imitates a lace bra, with a fine mesh pattern, shaded rose-like flowers and curling scrollwork along the cups and centre. Soft grey shading gives the lace a raised, fabric-like depth, and the three views show the design from the front and both sides. The image is in black and grey with no colour ink.

Mind the pins, love, the pattern's pricked through and you'll lose your place. Now. Edith Brough sat at her pillow in Long Eaton the winter the river froze, forty bobbins clicking like a clock shop, working a net ground so fine you had to hold it to the window to see the holes.

The mill owner's wife had sent up a drawing on blue paper. Roses, she wanted, big ones, opened out in the middle of the mesh, with curling scrolls running down either side like the ends of a ribbon someone had let go of. Grey thread, not white. Edith asked her why grey, and the woman said white looked like a wedding cake and she wanted something that looked like it had been left out in the rain on purpose.
It took Edith eleven weeks. Her fingertips went hard and the scrolls came out a little heavier on the left, which she never told a soul. When the panel was done she pressed it flat under a board with two flat irons and the family Bible, then carried it up the hill in brown paper that smelt of tallow.
The wife never came for it. The mill shut in thirty-one and the panel went into a biscuit tin with the old King's face on the lid, under my mother's christening gown. Go on, hold it to the light. Every rose is a hole that somebody decided to keep.
