Magnolia and ink splatter on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows two large pink and red magnolia blooms with soft, shaded petals, set against loose black ink splatters that spread across the upper back and shoulder. The four panels show the same shoulder from different angles and distances. The flowers are rendered in full colour with smooth gradients, while the splatter is solid black.

Dear Ruth,

You will laugh, but the magnolia came out of the ink pot. Mr Feld knocked it off the easel on Tuesday, black across the good Whatman, and I was certain he would sack me. Instead he stood there with his brush in the air and said, leave it. Then he painted the bloom over the stain as though the stain had asked for it.
I have watched him work for eleven months and still cannot tell you where his pencil ends and his nerve begins. He does not sketch the petals first. He lays the blush down with a wet sable, lets it bleed toward the edge, then drops the flower in while the paper is still breathing. Three hours each morning, and the glasshouse smells of wet earth and turpentine.
Yesterday I asked why he kept the splatters at all, when the commission was only for two magnolias. He wiped his fingers on his apron, looked at the black spots spreading across the lower sheet like a spilled night, and said the flowers would look lonely without something to stand against.
I have started keeping a small pot of ink on my own desk now. Do not tell him.
