Dearest Wilhelmina, the ferry has stopped again outside Kinloch, so I am writing this on the back of the tide tables while the deckhand pretends to mend a rope. You will laugh, but I have finally found the lace you wanted. It was in a dead woman's trunk in the tower room at Garrowmere, folded between sheets of brown paper that had gone soft as cloth. The housekeeper, Mrs Pryce, let me take it for a shilling and a promise not to tell the bailiff.

It is black, as you guessed, and the pattern is all little hunting birds and rosettes, with a scalloped edge that catches the light like wet slate. There was a ribbon too, tied in a bow that had been pressed so long it kept the shape of a pair of wings. I held it up to the window and the rain came through the broken glass and dripped on the sill, and I thought of you tying your own garter in the dressing room at the Assembly, cross because the knot would not hold.

I am posting this lace to you from Oban on Monday, wrapped in the last of the brown paper. Do not wear it for anyone who has not earned the wearing. Keep the bow loose so it lifts when you walk. And if the rain comes through your roof as it does through mine, put a basin under the ribbon and let it sing.
