Black lace garter tattoo with small floral motifs wrapped around a woman's upper thigh, worn above purple underwear.

Lace garter tattoo on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black lace garter design wraps fully around the upper thigh, with a scalloped lower edge and a band of small flower motifs. The linework is fine and detailed, with grey shading giving the lace a soft, sheer look. The thigh fills most of the frame, with purple underwear visible at the top and a dark wooden floor behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Snow had stopped by four, but the lane still held the cart ruts, and Nell could hear the ewes complaining in the top field while she sat at the kitchen table with her mother's lace pillow in her lap. Forty-one bobbins hung from the pins like small silver fish. Her mother had called the pattern Cutting Thorn, though nobody in Bramcote had grown a thorn in living memory.

Her brother came in stamping, bringing the cold with him. "Still at that?" he said. "Dad says the band's to be black, not cream, for the Pearce girl's wedding."

She did not look up. The scallop was the hard part: each point had to turn back on itself exactly, or the whole edge would wander like a drunk man walking home from the Plough. She had unpicked the same six inches three times since Boxing Day. "Black thread's stiffer," she said. "It'll hold a shape." He pulled a chair close and watched her crossing the pairs, the quick flick of her wrist, the bobbins knocking together like teeth. Outside, the lamp in the barn went on, and somewhere a dog barked once and gave up.

By midnight she had the band finished, a stretch of flowers the width of two fingers, every petal closed. She cut the last thread with her teeth, the way her mother had, and held it up to the lamp. The light came through the holes in the pattern and laid a shadow of little flowers across the oilcloth, and Tom, asleep now with his head on his arms, did not see it.
