Lace garter tattoo on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A band of lace-effect pattern wraps around the upper thigh, with a fan-shaped central motif flanked by scrolling curves and small dotted details. The linework is dark and crisp, and the lace panels are built up with stippled dots and soft grey shading. The image is black and grey, shot close up with hands holding the edge of a red and dark plaid garment above the tattoo.

"A garter," I said. "Or the bit of lace you'd put round a garter, if you were the sort to wear one to a wedding."
He ran his thumb along a scroll of dots, the little pinholes that tell the bobbins where to cross. Behind him a queue of lorries breathed diesel into the dark. I could have told him the pattern was older than the border itself, that Ida had pricked it at a kitchen table in Ypres before anybody thought to draw a line through the mud there, but he had stopped listening the moment he saw the stippling.
Instead he asked me to show him the half-stitch, the one with the twist that makes a mesh hold its shape. I picked up the spare bobbins from the dashboard and worked three rows on the back of his clipboard form while the lorry drivers swore at the barrier. He watched my hands rather than the paper.
He stamped the book without opening it again. Driving off, I saw in the mirror that he had kept a single pin from the cushion, holding the fan shape open against the wind on his desk, like a thing he might come back to.
