Henna floral design on the back of a hand
Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand shown palm down on a red patterned fabric, decorated with black henna. A large flower with concentric rings and dotted petals sits over the wrist, linked by curling vine scrolls to smaller star shapes on the back of the hand and fingers. The lines are dense and dark against the skin, with a soft, evenly lit composition and a tidy, well-balanced layout.

Mina had been mixing the paste since four, pouring lemon juice over the powder and stirring it with a teaspoon until it sat dark and glossy in the bowl, the way her mother's always had. Nobody in the back room of the community hall on Narborough Road was in a hurry. The cousins were eating samosas off paper plates and arguing about a song, and the radiator ticked under the window like a clock somebody had forgotten to wind.

She began with the flower because it had to come first. Start at the centre, her mother always said, with a dot, then ring around it, and ring again, until the circles stop wanting to be circles and turn into a wheel. The vine came after, curling off the wrist like something that had decided to climb. Her cone was nearly empty by the time she reached the stars, so she made them small and quick, five points each, and told herself nobody would count.
The aunt in the corner chair, who had watched every pattern in Leicester go on and come off over forty years, leaned forward and tapped the cloth with one finger. "You've left the star on the knuckle crooked." Mina looked. It was crooked. She could have wiped it, but the paste was already drying the way it always did, going from black to a brown-black that would hold for a fortnight, and by then nobody would remember the hurry.
She blew gently on the last dot and the room smelled of cloves and cut grass. By the wedding the stain would have deepened to the colour of strong tea, and only the crooked star would tell anyone who had been rushing at the end.
