Colour tattoo of a lakeside landscape with mountains, a large tree and two silhouetted figures, sitting on a limb.

Lakeside landscape with tree and silhouettes

Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a lake framed by green, rounded hills and distant mountains, with a large tree on the right and two dark silhouetted figures sitting on the grass in the foreground. The outlines are bold and dark, with softer, painterly shading in greens, yellows, pale blues and pinks for the sky and water. The composition fills a roughly circular panel, with the tree and figures anchoring the lower right.

Grandad never let me sit on the left-hand root. He said it belonged to whoever was looking at the water, and that was him, so he took the left and I took the right, and we sat with our backs against the trunk while the mountains across the mere turned pink and then grey, the way they do when the cloud comes down.

Nobody lives on the far shore now. The hills are still green, mostly, though the yellow is dust blown in from the north fields every summer, and the water is only pale blue because the algae bloom hasn't reached this bay yet. Grandad says it will. He says a lot of things, and most of them he learned from a wall.

The wall was in the old transit hall at Thornhill, which I have never seen, a painting of this exact view stretched across forty metres of plaster. He went there as a boy with his own father, before the hall flooded, and he says the painter put two men on the grass so you could imagine yourself sitting between them. Nobody ever sat there. You stood in front of it and looked.

This afternoon he took my hand, pressed it flat against the bark and said, look, that's the same tree. I looked, and I could not tell whether he meant the tree in front of us or the one on the wall. I said yes. He nodded as though it was the answer he had been waiting seventy years to hear, and we went on sitting there until the cloud reached the shore and the mountains disappeared.
