Black lettering tattoo in Latin script running along a forearm, with another hand touching the skin in a pale, warm-toned photo.

Latin lettering tattoo on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm carries a black-ink tattoo of several lines of small serif lettering, which appears to be Latin text, running along the arm. A second hand pinches or holds the skin just above the wrist, and the arm is photographed against a plain cream background. The image has a faded, warm colour cast, and the lettering is shown in soft black and grey tones.

Hannah had the oven door open before the church clock across the square finished striking five. The dough on the bench had already sighed itself into shape under her palms, and she worked it the way her uncle had taught her, folding and turning until the surface went smooth as wet slate. Tobias never trusted clocks. He trusted the smell of the proving room and the colour the crust took when it was ready.

Above the racks, in his cramped square capitals, he had chalked a line years ago and never wiped it off: quem minimum credunt. Hannah had asked him once what it meant. He had flour on his glasses and said it was about the people you least expect to believe, and that a baker should keep a sentence like that where he could see it, to stop himself getting sentimental about the customers.

The chalk had faded to a grey ghost this winter, and in March he had gone into the hospital on Mill Road and not come back to the bench. Hannah found his ledger under the flour sacks on Monday. Between the columns of sums, in pencil, he had written one line for whoever came after: Let the loaf tell you when.

Now the window had turned from black to the colour of weak tea. She slid the tray in, shut the door, and with a clean finger drew the words in the dusting of flour on the bench, the way he used to, letters soft and crooked. Then she brushed them away with the side of her hand and reached for the next batch.
