Feather tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line feather is drawn lengthwise down the inner forearm, starting just below the wrist and curving towards the elbow. The delicate, feathered strokes are pale against the skin, with the barbs shown as short, light hatching. The black and white photograph shows the hand clenched above the tattoo, set against a wooden floor.

Seven weeks out from Valparaíso, the barque Mercy's Hand had stopped making sense of the sky, and Tomas Wren had stopped trying. He kept the ship's log because the mate had snapped his spectacles off the Horn, and because Wren wrote a neat hand. Each evening he entered the wind, the bearings, and the number of biscuits lost to weevils.

On the forty-ninth day a grey seabird came down on the foredeck, too spent to lift again. Beside it lay a single feather as long as Wren's forearm, its barbs so fine they caught the light like hair. He pressed it between the pages at the day's entry, meaning to throw it over the rail, and did not.

The next morning the lookout cried land, and there was none, only a brown smudge that resolved into drifting kelp. The captain, a man who trusted nothing he could not measure, rang the bell twice and said the bird had been bad luck. Wren said nothing. He had already written the bird into the log, and a log, he had learned, could not be unwritten.

They raised the Falklands eleven days later under low cloud. When the boat grounded on the shingle, Wren opened the book to the forty-ninth day. The feather had gone, but it had left its shape in the paper, pale against the ink, the way a thing does when it has been held a long time and then let go.
