Lattice band and cross tattoos on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest together, showing a lattice band of crossed lines encircling one finger and a motif of stacked crosses on the neighbouring finger. The linework is thin and even, with the ink appearing black and grey against the skin. The shot is close and slightly soft-focus, with the fingers filling the frame against a pale, blurred background.

Dear Marnie,

I nearly didn't come to the reunion, and I'm glad I did, if only to see Pete Harrod still can't tell a joke without checking his shoes first. The hall smelled exactly as it did in 1994, floor polish and wet coats, and someone had pinned the old house photos along the back wall so we could point at ourselves and lie about our hair.
You asked me afterwards what I meant by the knot. I meant the net-mending lesson Mr Ashdown gave us in the woodwork room, the one you thought was pointless. Diamond mesh, he said, a lattice that holds because every crossing is tied on its own. I've kept at it. Last week I mended the lower panel of the old herring net that hangs in the Gallows Café, and the landlady wanted to know who'd taught me to pull a line so tight it sang.
The stacked crosses I found on the harbour wall, cut into the stone by fishermen counting boats in and out. Four short strokes, one on top of another, with a fifth slashed through them. You told me that was tallying, not praying. I'd like to think we were both right.
I'm enclosing the photograph from the car park. Keep it. And if you're free in March, come and help me hang the new net. It takes two pairs of hands, and you always were better at the knots.
Love, Jo
