Small black cross tattoo on a wrist
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black cross sits on the inner wrist, drawn with a simple, uniform line and filled in with dark ink. The hand is held at the top right of the frame with pale French manicure nails. The background is blurred and dark, suggesting a car interior, with a partly visible logo at the left edge.

Sit down, sit down, the eleven-forty isn't coming before I've finished, so you may as well hear it. My grandfather kept the gates at Hollin Cross, a halt on the moor line where the lane met the rails and nothing else met anything. He had a cross painted on the post beside the crossing, black on white, and every carter knew to stop when he saw it. He used to say it was the only honest thing on that line, because it asked nothing of you but to wait.

One February the snow came in sideways, and the stationmaster sent word that the mail was running late out of Carlisle. Grandfather walked the boards with a hurricane lamp, checking the bolts, and found a woman's glove snagged in the ratchet of the gate wheel. She had stood there the night before, he said, looking at the rails the way people do when they have a long road ahead and no notion yet where it leads.
He didn't call the constable. He hung the glove on the cross-post, and in the morning she came back for it, and they sat in the waiting room for an hour while the kettle boiled dry. Nobody ever knew what was said between them. What the porters knew was that the glove went back on her hand and she walked up the lane toward the village, and the train came through on time.
Grandfather never told me what he said to her. He only told me the cross on that post was a sign to stop, and that stopping was a thing a person could choose. Mind the step as you go, and mind the lamp.
