Lavender sprigs on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two slender lavender stems rising from a fan of green leaves at the base, with purple flower spikes tipped in pale blue. Thin, delicate linework forms the stems and leaves, and small scattered dots of violet ink add a loose, splattered effect. The design sits on smooth, pinkish skin against a plain background, with the sprigs angled diagonally across the frame.

The boats came in on the evening tide, and Maren Oyle waited on the slip with a bundle of lavender under her arm, because her grandmother had said a fisher's wife should always have something sweet-smelling to hand when the men came up from the water. The men did not care for scent. They cared for the weather and the price of herring at Scarrow market. But Maren had cut the stems at dusk from the bank behind the net-sheds, where the bees went mad in July, and she held them up anyway.

Her brother Tam was the last off the Perseverance. He had been at sea nine days in a fog that would not lift, and he came up the slip with his cap in his fist and no fish in his hold. He said the nets had gone over the side in the Skerry Gap and taken the bottom off the boat with them. Maren said nothing. She pushed a sprig into his hand. He crushed it without thinking and the smell rose between them, sharp and clean, the way the moor smelled after rain.
That night she walked him out past the net-sheds to the bank. In the grey light the flower spikes were blue at the tips and violet below, and the green fans of leaves lay low against the grass, dusted with dew like spilt ink. Tam knelt and counted the stems. Two, he said. Two were always the lucky number on a lost boat. Maren told him the old saying was wrong. Two stems meant one had to bend toward the other to stand, and that was all the luck anybody ever got.
They cut the stems together before the light came up, and in the morning the Perseverance went out again with a new net and a sprig tucked behind the wheelhouse door.
