Lavender sprig on a lower leg

Fine line · Calf · Colour · Photo

A slender lavender sprig with two flower spikes rises from a thin green stem with small leaves. The linework is delicate, and the purple flowers are shaded with soft, layered colour. The sprig is centred on pale skin against a dark blue sleeve and a brown background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lavender is already cut when you reach the back step, tied in a bundle with garden string and going silver at the tips, and Mr Pryce is standing in the yard pretending he has not been watching the gate since noon. You hand over the paper bag from Tanner's. He does not look inside it. He looks at the bundle instead, as if it might have changed its mind about being bought.

You had been sent for two spikes, not twenty. Mrs Pryce kept a drawer of linen laid up with sprigs, the way her mother had, and the drawer has been shut since the spring of 1951. The shop bundles are for the market stall and smell of nothing much. So on the way up Mill Lane you went round by the chapel wall, where the old row grows waist high and nobody cuts it, and snapped two stems with your thumbnail, the tallest and straightest you could find, and wrapped them in your handkerchief.

He takes them from you carefully, the way you would take a letter that might still be answered. He turns them over in the light. 'She planted those two side by side,' he says, 'the year she went to Leeds and came back again. Said they'd never take in this soil.' He presses one spike between his finger and thumb, and a faint purple dust comes off on his skin. Then he presses a florin into your palm where a shilling was owed and tells you to keep the change for the bus.

You walk back down Mill Lane with the coin warm in your fist, and behind you, through the open window of a house you will never see the inside of again, a drawer slides open and shut with a sound like a breath let out.
