Leaf and flower tattoo on hand and wrist

Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a dark botanical tattoo covering the back of a hand and running down the wrist, with leaves and layered flower shapes. The linework is fine and detailed, with stippled dotwork shading that gives the petals and leaves texture. The ink is black on skin, and the subject is framed against a soft-focus white knitted top and loose brown hair.

Dear Priya,

You will not believe who turned up at the hall on Saturday with her name badge still stuck to her cardigan. Mrs Hollis, our old botany teacher, though she is so retired she called me Margaret Jane, the way she did when we let the sweet peas wilt. She asked whether I still had the greenhouse key. I said I had handed it back in 1989, and she laughed and said nobody ever hands anything back properly.

Afterwards I drove out past the allotments to the old school grounds, which the council has half sold off. The glasshouse is still standing, though one panel has gone milky and the door is held shut with baler twine. The bench where we pressed leaves between blotting paper is furred with moss. Someone had left a fern in a clay pot, and it had grown up through the broken pane above, its fronds dotted with dew, each drop catching the light like the stipple we used to make with a dip pen.

I sat on an upturned crate and thought about the summer you left, and the cuttings you promised to take to Canada. You never wrote about them, and I never asked. I have been drawing leaves since then, in fine black pen, one dot at a time, up late when the house is quiet. I think I have been trying to get the veins to hold their shape.

I took a cutting from the fern before I left, wrapped it in a damp tissue, and it is sitting on my windowsill now. Mrs Hollis would say it will root or it won't. I have decided it will.

Love, Margaret
