Black and grey roses on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two large roses with shaded petals and leaves sit side by side across the outer thigh, with stems and sprigs spreading outwards. The linework is dark and defined, with soft grey shading that gives the petals depth and the leaves a rounded form. The photo is taken in bright window light against white bedding, and the tattoo fills most of the frame.

Two rose bushes, bare-rooted and dark with damp, their canes wrapped in newspaper from Kendal.

'They're for the inn on the far side,' she said. 'Nobody over there has ever grown anything that wasn't a sheep.'
My father swore at the mule, and I went down the slope for water from the beck. When I came back she had the roses laid along the wall and was picking the dead leaves off one with her thumbnail, the way you'd lift a stitch. 'Cabbage roses,' she said. 'The old kind. They don't need much, only somebody who'll stay put.'
We reached the inn after dark. My father dug the holes by lantern light, and she set the roots in herself, spreading them the way her mother had taught her, fingers in the soil to the knuckle. I was meant to be back on the cart by first light. I wasn't. I stayed through the winter to water them from the beck, carrying the cans up the path in the frost, and I am still here, forty years on, with the roses climbing the lintel and their leaves gone rounded and grey with age, and a mule that sits down in the same place every autumn.
