Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are held together in a close black and white photograph, with the tattooed fingers forming the main focus. One hand shows a small letter K beside a heart on a finger, with more loose linework across the back of the hand. The other shows a small heart above a letter Q on a finger, with fine, open outlines and no shading.

Snow had sealed the lane above the Crooked Stile by four o'clock, and the only light left in the taproom came from the fire and two lamps on the card table. Ada Mott had lost three winters running to Teodor Vane, and she meant to end the fourth owing him nothing but a bad temper.

They played for the room upstairs, the single bed under the eaves, a stake the landlady had set down with a sniff and no interest in refereeing. Teodor dealt slowly, squaring each pack against the baize before he let it go. Ada watched his hands the way you watch weather, and he watched hers back. Twice the landlady's grey dog wandered in to sprawl on the hearthrug, and twice they paused until it settled.

The turn came with the last card of the pack. Ada had the queen of hearts pinned under her palm. Teodor had the king tucked against his cuff, where a man keeps what he cannot afford to lose. Neither would show. Outside, the wind dropped, and the snow stopped so suddenly that the silence rang in their ears like a struck glass.

"Split it," he said. "Bed and all."

She laughed, slid the queen across the table, and found his fingers already waiting, the king laid down beside it with the two hearts touching at their corners. The landlady came down at dawn to find them asleep sitting up, the cards still face down between them, and the bed upstairs made up tight for nobody.
