Small finger tattoos on two hands
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands overlap across the frame, with fingers, knuckles and nails in soft focus. Two small tattoos sit on the sides of separate fingers, each a simple outlined motif with a rounded top and vertical strokes below, resembling a small crown or flame. The image is black and grey with soft tonal shading on the skin, and the hands fill most of the composition.

The lock at Culham had been sulking since March, and by the time Ruth Fenwick got the Marigold through it the paraffin stove had gone out twice and the water tank read empty. Tomas was already on the bank with the windlass, swearing in the Dutch he saved for machinery. She tied off on the cleat, passed him the bow line, and pretended not to notice the grey light on the water, which meant rain before supper.

They had been stuck at Eynsham through a wet January, long enough for boredom to turn into a game. Tomas found a sewing needle and a bottle of black ink in the galley drawer and pricked a small candle flame onto the side of his own finger, a rounded top and three short strokes beneath it, like a lamp guttering in a draught. Ruth laughed until she had to sit down on the coal bunker, then took the needle herself and copied it onto the finger beside his, so that when they held the tiller together the two little flames sat side by side.
Neither of them told the marina lads or the sluice keepers what the marks meant, and nobody asked. The ink faded to the colour of old pencil by spring, and Ruth kept meaning to go over it again. Some mornings she caught it in the cold light, a grey smudge on her skin, and thought of those three strokes as a sort of stubborn fire, the kind that keeps going when the stove has long since died.
At the next lock the water rose and the boat lifted, and Tomas reached across the tiller without looking. Their fingers met over the wheel, two small flames touching, and the Marigold slid out of the stone chamber into the open river.
