Matching geometric star tattoos on fingers

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest on a grey fabric surface, each showing a small black tattoo on the ring finger. Each tattoo is a radial geometric star with a central circle and a dot, built from fine lines and stippled shading. The black and white photograph is framed closely on the hands, with a thin bracelet visible on each wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The chain had gone slack again by the time Mabel reached the sluice, so she knelt in the wet clay and read the bearing off the brass a second time, the way Hollis had taught her before his eyes gave out. Eight lines fanned from the centre pin like spokes on a wheel that had lost its rim. Every one of them was true, and that was the trouble. The drainage board wanted a straight cut across Sallow Fen, but the water kept insisting on going round.

Hollis had drawn the star himself in the back of the survey book, a radial thing with a ring at its heart and a single dot inside the ring where the pin went. He stippled it with the blunt end of a pencil, hour after hour, while the lamp guttered and frogs argued in the reeds. "Every line points at the same stubborn place," he said. "Find that and you'll find where the land wants to be dug."

She walked the eight bearings through the night with a lantern and a ball of twine. Seven ended in reed beds or a drowned gate. The eighth ended at the old chapel wall, at a flat stone nobody had shifted since the monks left, marked with the same small ring and dot. Beneath it the ground was dry as bread.

In the morning the board's men came with spades and found nothing but a clean seam of water running the wrong way. Mabel pressed her thumb to the cold dot on the stone, the way Hollis used to, and felt the needle in her chest settle north. She chalked a line from the chapel to the village green and left the star open at its centre for whoever came after to close.
