Leafy vine tattoo across a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A slender vine with several pointed leaves in outline runs diagonally across the forearm close to the wrist, ending in a small sprig at the lower edge. The linework is thin and even, with the leaves left unshaded or lightly filled in black. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the wooden plank background sits behind the hand and arm.

The crate had been nailed shut for nine days before anyone thought to open it, and by then Hester Pryce had already decided the cutting was dead. The wet moss inside had gone grey at the edges and smelled of the hold, of tar and bilge water and the sour apples the first mate kept under his bunk. She set the crate on the potting bench at the back of the Bristol shed, rolled her sleeves, and waited for the lid to tell her something.

Nothing about it looked alive. Then she found the stem, no thicker than a knitting needle, its bark gone the colour of old pewter. She turned it under the lamp and saw, at the lower node, a small green swelling no bigger than a barleycorn. Someone had snapped it from a vine on a hillside above a port she would never see, someone else had wrapped it in moss and argued with the customs men, and now it was hers to decide about.

She trimmed the stem on the slant with her grandfather's knife, dipped it in honey and willow water, and set it in a pot of sand by the window where the frost ferned the glass. Each morning she tested the sand with one finger. On the eleventh morning the swelling had split, and a pair of leaves had unfolded, pointed and dark as ink, and she sat down on the upturned crate and did not move for a long while.
