Small crescent moon on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close side view of a bare foot and ankle resting on a wooden floor. A small, delicate crescent moon outline sits on the ankle, with a tiny solid dot to its right. The fine, even black linework and soft monochrome lighting keep the focus on the tattoo against the blurred background.

Dear Nan,

The lock keeper at Stoke Wharf says the new moon came early this month, and I believed him, because I have been watching the sky over the cut every night since the solicitor's letter arrived. You asked whether the Marigold still floats. She does. I scrubbed her cabin roof three times before the paint would take, and this morning I finally got the tiller to stop knocking against the rudder post.
Dad used to draw on the back of lock tickets while we waited for a gate to fill. Always the same thing: a thin curl of a moon, and a single dot tucked just to its right. He said the dot was the evening star keeping the moon company, because nobody should have to go round the sky on their own. I thought he was making it up to stop me fidgeting. I think now he was making it up for himself.
Last Tuesday I came through the Harcourt tunnel after dark with the lamp dead and only the square of sky at the far end to steer by. Water dripped off the brickwork onto my wrist, and I held my hand up against that small patch of stars. The moon was no bigger than a fingernail paring. I stayed there until a boat behind me sounded its horn twice, and I realised I had stopped the Marigold dead in the middle of the channel.
So I am not selling her. The house can go to whoever wants a garden. I have bought a tin of black paint and a fine brush, and tonight I am going to put a dot beside the moon on the cabin door, the way Dad did on the tickets, so the Marigold has someone for company. Come up in the spring and bring your bad knees. There is a mooring at Stoke that gets the sun until four.
Love, Jo
