Leopard and flower tattoo design

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil or ink drawing of a tattoo design showing a large layered flower at the top, a spotted leopard head at the lower right, and a stylised female profile with a headdress on the left. The linework is bold and clean, with shading and stippled dots on the leopard and petals, and the outlines are framed by geometric key and spiral patterns. The design is drawn in black and grey on white paper, with two black pens placed in the foreground.

Dear Nell,

The dahlia on the east wall finally opened this morning, the big ruffled one you gave me cuttings of before you left for Lisbon. Its petals are the colour of weak tea and its centre looks like someone has pressed a brass button into it. I stood on the stepladder for twenty minutes just looking at it, which Mr Okafor from next door found very suspicious.

The cat came back on Tuesday, or at least a cat did. Long, spotted, thin as a coat hanger, it sat on the potting bench and watched me repot the geraniums with the patience of a magistrate. I know what you'll say. It's a ginger tom with a bad coat and a worse attitude, and the vet has already told me it belongs to nobody but itself. But it has rosettes along its flank like the ones you drew on the back of that seed packet, the ones with the little dots in the middle, and I found myself talking to it the way you used to talk to the girl at the flower stall.

I've painted the stepped key pattern you liked along the gate, and I did the spirals on the shed door in green gloss because the white was looking grubby. Nobody has complained. Mrs Pryce asked if I'd been to Mexico. I said only in the seed catalogue.

Come home at the weekend if you can. The dahlia will be over by Sunday, but the cat is still here, and I think it has decided it lives here now. Bring the good secateurs. I'll make the tea.

Love, Win
