Pink butterflies on a foot
Other · Colour · Photo
Three pink butterflies with dark grey outlines sit along a wavy trail on the top of a foot. The trail is filled with pink dotted and stippled shading, edged with a thin yellow line, and small dots trail beside it. The colour ink dominates against the pale skin, and the design runs diagonally from the ankle towards the toes on a dark background.

Now sit down, the lot of you, and mind the candyfloss, because this is the true account of how Mabel Quirk lost her shoes and found the Dusk Wind. You'll not get it from the posters. The posters say the Wind was a painted gypsy wagon, which is nonsense, because the Wind was never painted at all. It was pink, and it was dusted all over with little stars, the way a moth gets dusted when it's been through the sugar bin.

She was a ticket girl on the Michaelmas run, and that season the fair came to a field outside Stowmarket with the grass gone to rags. On the last night, the lamps went out one by one until only the Wind was lit, a long ribbon of pink light looping up off the ground and over the hoopla stalls. Three painted butterflies rode on it, and they were nearly the size of tea trays. Mabel followed them the way you would follow a dropped coin, out past the dodgem cars and the cold cabbage pies, and she never once looked down at her feet.
What she found at the end of the trail was a little wooden stile and an old man asleep on it, with a yellow ribbon tied round his wrist. He woke, looked at her bare toes, and said the Wind had been waiting forty years for someone to walk all the way to the edge of the light without asking what it was for. Mabel said she supposed that was her, and so it was, and the butterflies settled on the top of her foot like they'd been painted there all along. They're still there, if you believe me, which is the only way anybody ever gets to see them.
