Leopard print tattoo on upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A leopard print pattern of irregular rosettes covers the upper arm and top of the shoulder, with some spots fading toward the elbow. The spots are filled in with solid black and softer orange-brown shading, and the edges are soft rather than sharply outlined. The arm fills most of the frame against a pale door, with a patterned top and a necklace visible at the edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The coat came up to the eleventh floor in a Co-op bag, the way most things did in Hadley House, passed hand to hand on the stairs because the lift had been out since March. Nobody knew whose it was at first. Then Sandra from nine said it had been her cousin's, and her cousin had got it off a man selling things from a van outside the bingo, and that was as much history as anyone wanted before the kettle boiled.

I wore it to my niece's christening in the spring. It was too wide across the shoulders and smelt of somebody else's cheap cigarettes, but the spots were the thing. Black blots the size of a palm, each one with a rim of orange-brown that bled out soft at the edges, as if the cloth had been dipped in weak tea and left to dry. Some had worn almost to nothing near the hem, pale as digestive biscuits, and I liked those best. They looked like they had been walked a long way and did not mind saying so.

At the christening little Tomas from fourteen kept staring at my arm, then at the coat, then back again. Finally he asked whether I was a cat. I said I was a woman in a coat with a long history, and he should ask the coat. He reached out and pressed one black spot with his finger, and it came away grey on his fingertip, dust and nothing else. He looked at it for a long time. By the next Thursday the coat was on Sandra's hook again, passed on, and that grey smudge on Tomas's finger was the only piece of it that stayed on the eleventh floor.
