Leopard print tattoo on a hip and thigh
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A close-up of a leopard print tattoo covering the hip and upper thigh, with the wearer's black underwear visible at the top edge of the frame. The rosettes are filled with solid black ink and orange ochre shading, with soft, slightly uneven edges and no fine detail. The skin is pale and the photograph is taken at an angle on a black leather sofa, with a hand and red nail polish visible at the right.

The snow had shut the Kestrel Pass by the third week of November, and the leopard came down anyway, the way it always did when the goats began to go missing from the high folds. Old Marta at the lower farm said it had come down in her grandmother's time too, and that it had never once taken a person, only what the valley could spare. Her grandson Piet did not believe her until the morning he found a goat's ear on the threshold and, beside it in the frost, a single round print the size of a saucer.

He went up after it with a lantern and a bag of salt, because his mother had told him that a cat that is hungry will trade. At the bend above the waterfall he found the animal lying in a hollow, its coat dulled and patchy, its black rosettes gone grey at the edges where the cold had got into them. It lifted its head and said nothing, which Piet took as permission. He set down the salt and the bread and asked what it wanted.
The leopard looked at the rocks around them, where the ochre seams ran red and yellow through the slate, and then at the boy. It told him that every spot on its body had once been a warm stone that the pass had given it to keep, and that the winter had cracked them loose one by one. If he would carry down the one that was still warm, the goats could stay in their pens until spring.
Piet found it under the lip of the hollow, black as a coal and rimmed in ochre, and it burned through the cloth of his pocket all the way down the mountain. Old Marta says the stone is still in the lower farm's wall, and that when the pass goes white, the spots on the leopard's flank come back up dark and warm to the touch.
