Leopard print tattoo on upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder with irregular rosette-shaped spots, filled in solid black with orange and brown shading inside some of them. The spots vary in size and spacing and are arranged to wrap around the curve of the arm. The skin is lit softly against a pale background, and a leopard print top and a pearl necklace are partly visible around the shoulder.

The third rosette came out lopsided, the way the first two had, so Nell scraped it back with a palette knife before the black could set. Out past the wardrobe door the pier band was tuning up for the matinee, a trombone sliding through the same three notes it had failed at since Easter. She had been hired to turn a bolt of brown velvet into a leopard for the panto dame, using her father's marine enamel and a fistful of sable brushes, and so far she had made four animals that looked like wet toast.

Mr Okonedo, who had run the pier wardrobe since before the storm took the ballroom roof, watched from his stool by the sink. "You're painting them on," he said. "A rosette isn't a spot with a ring round it. It's what's left when the colour gathers at the edges and the middle stays pale. Paint the gaps, girl, not the cat." She didn't believe him until she tried it, dabbing ochre into the hollow of a dark ring she had already laid down, and the whole shape lifted off the velvet as if it had been waiting to be let out.
She worked until the lamps along the promenade came on, leaving the gaps bare so the brown cloth showed through like a shadow under a hedge. The band packed up. Mr Okonedo hummed a waltz from the ballroom days and folded the dame's frock over his arm without looking at it, then went to fetch the kettle.
Next morning she carried the cat up to the stage in its wooden frame, and the spotlight came through the open rosettes, so that the leopard threw a crowd of pale coins across the boards, shifting whenever the dame stepped past it.
