Leopard print spots across the side of the torso
Other · Mixed · Photo
A band of leopard print spots, each filled with pink and dark ink, runs diagonally across the side of the abdomen above the hip. The spots are solid, with soft edges and no visible outlines, and they vary in size and shape. The close-up shows a lying torso with a leopard print blanket or rug in the background and a pink top at the lower edge of the frame.

The rug came into the St Aidan's jumble sale folded under a tea urn, and by eleven o'clock Maureen Pell had decided it was the only thing in the hall worth fighting for. Nobody else had bothered to unfold it. When she shook it out across the trestle table, the spots rolled out after it: plum-dark rosettes, some edged in a pink so cheerful it looked borrowed, a few faded to the shapes of countries nobody had heard of since the war.

Dennis Hoyle from the bric-a-brac stall wanted it for his camper van. He had wanted everything for his camper van since 1994. 'Fifty pence,' he said. 'Make it a pound and you can have the Kenwood as well.' Maureen told him the Kenwood had a cracked bowl and that rugs did not come with optional mixers. She paid the fifty pence in coppers, counted slowly, and he watched every coin drop into the tin like a man losing a bet.
At home she laid the rug across the lino in the front room, where it looked like something polite and spotted had walked through the house, leaving prints that went past the radiator and out into the hall. The pink ones caught the lamplight. She sat on the arm of the settee with her tea going cold and decided she would not apologise for it. There was no sense pretending the house needed a plainer sort of rug.
On Sunday she pegged it out on the line in a hard frost, the spots stiffening to grey and rust against the white fence. Three rooks came down onto the hedge to look it over, heads cocked, unimpressed. Dennis came up the path at noon with a pink ribbon from the bric-a-brac tin and the face of a man who had been caught out. 'Thought it wanted a bow,' he said. Maureen took the ribbon and tied it to the line without a word, which was as near to a thank you as either of them was going to manage.
