Leopard print tattoo on upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo covers the upper arm with a leopard print pattern of black rosettes, many with orange or pinkish fill inside. The black outlines have a soft, slightly feathered edge and the spots are spaced across the arm in a staggered arrangement. Orange and black dominate the image against a grey top and a plain indoor background, with the subject's face out of frame.

Ruth had counted eleven windfalls under the Bramley before she understood that the shadow lying across them was not leaf-shade at all. It was heavier than shade and it breathed. She stood very still with her apron full of drops, the way her father had taught her to stand near the bull, and waited for the thing to decide whether she was worth getting up for.

The man from the travelling menagerie found her there an hour later. His van was parked askew at the field gate with its back doors open, and he had the look of someone who had been up all night calling a name into hedgerows. Juno, he said, was a good cat, only fond of apples, which nobody had told him was a thing a leopard could be. Ruth said nothing about the leopard. She walked him down between the rows, past the wasps drunk on the cider windfalls, and pointed.
In the late light the cat's flank was spotted with sun coming through the canopy, and the spots were the same shape as the bruises on the fruit, dark rims with soft brown centres where the flesh had given way. The man went quiet. Juno lifted her head, looked at them both with mild disappointment, and walked off through the ditch as if she had only come for the one tree.
Ruth picked up the nearest windfall. It had a bruise the size of a thumbprint, ringed and faintly open. She turned it over in her palm, then put it in her pocket, where it would be pressed flat by morning and spotted with the cloth's own pattern, and she thought that every spot on that cat had been made by something falling against it.
