Infinity symbol on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black infinity symbol is tattooed on the side of a finger, with the outline sitting centrally on the skin. The thin, even linework is solid black with no shading, and the image is in natural light against a soft, pale background. Two hands are loosely interlocked around the finger, which keeps the tattoo as the clear focus of the composition.

The vicar has asked for the rings twice already, and Pearl is standing at the lectern with her hand out like a waiter with an empty tray. You are behind her holding the order of service rolled tight, and the wind off the harbour keeps pushing the church door open so the candles lean and recover. Your brother Tom was meant to bring the rings, but he is down on the slipway at Hythe, swearing at the outboard and trying to coax it into life for the crossing.

Twenty years ago the two of you practised knots on your nan's back step using bootlaces. She taught you the figure of eight, the one that never jams, and told you a loop that folds back into itself was the only honest shape for a promise. You made her show you again and again until your fingers knew it without looking. Tom always tied his with the tail going the wrong way and insisted it held.
He arrives at the last minute with salt in his hair and a ring box he has clearly been sitting on. He presses it into your palm rather than Pearl's, and you feel the warm weight of it through the velvet. Pearl sees your face and laughs, and the whole front pew laughs with her. You hand the box across, and when she opens it the rings slide out on a loop of blue cord, knotted neat as print in a figure of eight.
Afterwards, when the confetti has been swept from the flagstones, you find the cord still in your coat pocket. You work the knot loose the way your nan showed you, and it gives up in exactly the order it went together, one loop at a time.
